Deep in the back of our minds we've always known that the internet is a great hiding place for liars. They lurk everywhere, from chat rooms to online message boards and now onto blogs and online news reports.
The incident where a citizen reporter claimed that Steve Jobs had suffered a heart attack has left a sour taste in my mouth. There will always be lairs amongst us out there, but there should be a way to filter them out, for the most part at least. This fake report caused Apple stocks to dip and is now being investigated. This isn't just a joke and someone is going to get nailed to the wall for that one.
This sparks yet another question that I have about the internet. Do we believe everything we hear and see online? It doesn't fail that every week I'll get at least one "VIRUS IS COMING" email from someone, that I then have to debunk at snopes.com and reply back to. It seems as though if we see it in print, even online, we believe it. Is the American public this gullible? C'mon guys and girls...don't believe everything you see, or hear. Question authority and think for yourselves every now and again.
Here's a nice piece by the New York Times on this topic.

Steve Jobs Has a Heart Attack
It's scary that a fake report by a bozo on a CNN endorsed "user news" site can trigger stock prices to fall so sharply for Apple. This points out the major fault in online reporting. How did this report slip into the news wire? Gimmie a break CNN! This is fraud..

Service Pack 3 Blue Screen...Revisited
Once again I was reinstalling Windows XP on a HP Pavilion Athlon 64 machine and ended up with a BSOD after installing SP3. The ironic thing is that previous to installing SP3 I installed Microsoft's Pre-Sp3-No BSOD patch. Low and behold, it didn't work. I still had to manually rename the intelppm.sys file in Windows/System32/drivers to get the system to boot into Windows.

Surveillance of Skype Messages Found in China...Umm..Surprise?
SAN FRANCISCO — A group of Canadian human-rights activists and computer security researchers has discovered a huge surveillance system in China that monitors and archives certain Internet text conversations that include politically charged words.
Is this surprising to anyone? China monitors just about everything that comes in or out of the country. Not sure if this is really news worthy but I thought it was worth a mention. At least in the U.S. we have the illusion that we aren't being monitored. Stories like this make me want to encrypt everything.

Michele Allen, 32, will spend the next month in jail after admitting to a wild drunken weekend dressed in this silly cow outfit, said Middletown, Ohio, authorities.
Maybe she was stressed out after losing a bunch of money on Wall Street?.....;)
